Jesus says, "I am the good shepherd...so I sacrifice my life for the sheep." When we hear these words, what does the Jesus who springs into our imaginations look like –– a portrait with blurred edges and soft lighting? A cute, cuddly toy? Maybe time for some re-framing. As we conclude our year in John's gospel, we explore the question of what it means to shepherd, lead and use power the way Jesus does. To help us get into 'sheep mode', we hear from Cass and Caitlin, who got to hang out with sheep in Italy this summer.

"Give glory to God and tell the truth," they said. "We know this man is a sinner." He replied, "Whether he is a sinner or not, I don't know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see."

Make them holy by your truth; teach them your word, which is truth. Just as you sent me into the world, I am sending them into the world. And I give myself as a holy sacrifice for them so they can be made holy by your truth.

As Jesus continues his farewell speech to his disciples, he again promises that the Holy Spirit would be sent to them in his absence. In fact, he tells them that this is the best thing that could possibly happen. What does he say the Spirit will do––in them, and in the world––that will make it so?

As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commands and remain in his love.

"If you love me, obey my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you."
––John 14:15-16
Our culture tends to balk at words like 'obedience' and 'commandments', believing that anything that sounds restrictive must in fact be restrictive. But what if true freedom actually comes from having clear boundaries? What do the commandments of Christ reveal about Christ himself? And are we given any help in keeping them?
